Arnaud Desplechin, on editing

Today I interviewed Arnaud Desplechin, an utterly lovely French film director who said that if he’s ever stuck when he’s editing a scene and can’t figure out how to cut it together, he turns off the sound on the footage and puts on a random piece of music.  Nothing chosen intellectually, just whatever he’s been listening to.  Then, with the dialogue muted, he cuts the scene to the music, based only on the actors’ facial expressions & gestures.  When he puts the dialogue back in, he invariably discovers that the scene is almost always perfectly cut with the best possible take for each moment.
